The ArcGIS Enterprise Service provides members of LSA with access to enterprise-level data collaboration, sharing, and management features. The service supports enterprise geodatabases, web services, and distributed geoprocessing or geoanalytics.
Service Status: Active
This service is available 24/7 with a maintenance window on Wednesdays 7:30 AM–9:00 AM.

ArcGIS Enterprise provides the enterprise-level capabilities of ESRI's ArcGIS software suite. It enables central management of GIS assets, powers the enterprise GIS with web services, offers support for real-time GIS, easy sharing of imagery, provides access to spatial data in databases, extends the reach of GIS capabilities using client apps, and integrates GIS with existing IT infrastructure. The LSA Research Computing and Infrastructure ArcGIS Enterprise Service provides members of the LSA community with access to ArcGIS Enterprise capabilities, without having to acquire, operate, and maintain their own server infrastructure. Additionally, the LSA Research Computing and Infrastructure ArcGIS server is integrated with campus single-sign-on solutions.

Below are some examples of how ArcGIS Enterprise capabilities can be utilized. We also encourage you to contact us to discuss how you can best leverage ArcGIS Enterprise in your research and teaching by emailing LSATechnologyServices@umich.edu.

  • Ensure everyone is working with the same data — Enterprise geodatabases allow you to manage the distribution, replication, versioning, and archiving of data. Your team will always be accessing the right data from their web, mobile, or desktop GIS environment. No more passing around and struggling to keep track of multiple copies of your data among collaborators.
  • Work with larger data sets — Enterprise geodatabases enable you to move beyond the size and performance limitations of desktop-oriented GIS storage formats.
  • Preserve a snapshots of your data — At milestones, like publication or the start of a field day, you can create an archived snapshot of your data, which will allow you to always have access to a copy of your data as it was at that point time.
  • Tag and manage versions of your data — At any point in time you can tag and branch versions of your data, so that you can try something out without messing up your original data, or to provide field workers with the subset of data they need for their activities that day. Later, you can review and merge changes in those versions back to the original data set.
  • Work with your data in the field — Native and web apps for smartphones and tablets, such as Collector for ArcGIS and Survey123 for ArcGIS, allow you to collect, view, and analyze data in the field. Many of these apps support off-line access, so that you can use their capabilities even when you don't have a connection to the Internet, and then latter sync any changes when you do.
  • Publish data sets, maps, and geoprocessing tools as web services — You can share your data, maps, and tools via a variety of web services using ArcGIS Enterprise, such as WCS, WMS, WFS, KML, etc. This allows you and others to easily share and incorporate your work into other maps and applications, such as ArcGIS Online or Google Maps.
  • Tackle complex, computationally-intensive geoprocessing tasks — Use server resources to preform advanced GIS analysis, which may take too long using your desktop resources.
  • Geocoding — Utilize Esri's Business Analyst US and Canada geocode data to convert your addresses to locations, or create your own geocoder for other areas of the world.

Features

This service utilizes ESRI ArcGIS Enterprise capabilities to support:

  • Enterprise geodatabases, which can handle much larger data sets than desktop-centric GIS storage models
  • Data archiving, replication, versioning, and distributed editing capabilities, for simple, yet powerful, data collaboration, sharing, and management
  • Geoprocessing services to enable more complex, computationally-intensive analysis than achievable with standard laptop and desktop GIS use
  • Web services to provide access to your data via a variety of common standards, such as WCS, WFS, WMS, and KML
  • Web services to enable support for in-the-field data access, collection, and analysis, both in offline and online situations
  • Web services which aid in lowering the bar for access to basic GIS capabilities, enabling simple, rich data-sharing and -dissemination, and support for enhanced data-discovery through Web GIS technologies, such as ArcGIS Online and Storymaps

By providing access to these capabilities at the college level, individual members of the LSA community do not have to deal with acquiring, configuring, and maintaining their own ArcGIS Enterprise infrastructure.

Rates & Pricing

We provide free access to this service for members of the LSA community whose projects met the following criteria:

  1. Storage needs are less than 2TB; a combination of all database, cache, or on-server file needs. (If you need additional space, note that you can leverage your LSA Research Storage, for tasks such as serving static imagery, linked content, etc.)

  2. Requires less than 20 hours per year of LSA TS RCIS assistance. Typically this means tasks like managing users and groups, assistance with data management, troubleshooting connections and workflows, etc.

  3. Use of the service will not directly result in the need for additional server hardware, nor upgrades to existing server hardware beyond our planned service levels and upgrades.

If a project's needs exceed the above criteria, then we can work with you to design and appropriate solution and determine appropriate costs. Please contact us to discuss the details. For example,

  • Additional storage needs beyond 2TB, which can be accommodated by adding disk to our existing servers, would be at-cost for MiServer/MiDatabase.
  • Assistance from LSA TS RCIS beyond 20 hours would be at an hourly rate.
  • Additional software and infrastructure to support your project would typically be passed on at-cost, such as a dedicated ArcGIS for server implementation on Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Azure.

Users from outside LSA can contact us for pricing.

Note that the ArcGIS Enterprise Service is intended for active projects, and not for archiving data over the long-term. If you need such archival services, or anticipate needing them after your project is completed, then please let us know at LSATechnologyServices@umich.edu, and we can work with you to plan for other options.

Who can use this service?

Researchers and Instructors in LSA. Other members of the university community are granted access on a case-by-base basis, and are encouraged to contact us and discuss their needs.

Note that the ArcGIS Enterprise Service is intended for active projects, and not for archiving data over the long-term. If you need such archival services, or anticipate needing them after your project is completed, then please let us know at LSATechnologyServices@umich.edu, and we can work with you to plan for other options.

Where can the service be used?

Access control over data and services is highly configurable, and can range from a single user to public, anonymous access. The server supports both on-line an off-line use cases. It is also makes use of campus single-sign-on, so you can use umich accounts to control access.

Security of Data

Data stored on the ArcGIS Enterprise Service reside on ITS's Mainstream Storage. Your data are protected by the Mainstream Storage backup schedule, which currently is:

  • Daily snapshots at noon and 4:00 PM, retained for 3 days
  • Nightly snapshots at midnight every day, retained for 7 days
  • Weekly snapshots every Sunday morning at midnight, retained for 8 weeks

For more information on the types of sensitive data that can be stored on the ArcGIS Enterprise Service, see the Mainstream Storage entry in the Sensitive Data Guide to IT Services.
