The Kaltura video service allows any UofM student, staff, or faculty member to create, store, embed, and share videos. Everyone with a Umich account automatically has a Kaltura account. There are two ways to access your Kaltura account: inside Canvas and via the ITS standalone MiVideo site.

Both of these ways access the same account, but they each have slightly different controls available. One of the differences is that you cannot get a shareable link or embed code from inside Canvas. Only the standalone MiVideo site will give you that.

Logging in to MiVideo

To log in to your account via the MiVideo, go to https://www.mivideo.it.umich.edu/. In the upper right corner of the screen, you will see a “Login” link. Click on it, and then on the “Login” item in the dropdown menu that appears.

This will take you to the UofM Weblogin. Use your usual UofM username and password. You may also see an Information Release page; check the information and click “Confirm” at the bottom of the page.

The MiVideo site will reload, and will now show your name at the top right corner.

Accessing Your Videos

Once you are logged in, click on your name, at the top right corner of the MiVideo site header. From the dropdown menu that appears, select “My Media”.

This will take you to your list of videos, which should look familiar from My Media, in Canvas.

Getting a Shareable Link or Embed Code

To get a link or embed code that can be shared outside of Canvas, click on the title of the video you wish to share. This will open the video’s Details page. Below the video itself, and below the video transcript if there is one, you will see a set of two or three tabs: Details, Attachments (if there are captions), and Share.

Click the “Share” tab. This will open up a selection of options, including:

  • Link to media page
    • Links to this video on the MiVideo site
    • May require UofM login to view, depending on Publish setting
    • If sharing outside UofM, set video to Unlisted in the Publish settings
  • Embed
    • HTML code that can be placed in any webpage
    • Embedded video becomes a public version with no access controls
  • oEmbed
    • Link that will become a video player in a webpage (e.g. Twitter) and most email
    • Embedded video becomes a public version with no access controls
  • Email
    • Requires video be published in the MiVideo site first
    • Once a video is so published, selecting this option automatically opens a Gmail window with a link to the video in the email body

Publish Settings

If you wish to share by link or you wish to use the Email option and have not yet published the video in MiVideo, click on the “Actions” menu at the right, across from the Share tab. In the dropdown menu that appears, select “Edit”.

This will open the video’s Edit page. Look for the line of tab options below the video preview and click on “Publish”.

The Publish tab will show you a set of three options: Private, Unlisted, and Published. If the video is Published, then below the three options you will see all the “channels”, or locations, where the video is already visible. This will include any Canvas courses you have shared or embedded the video in.

If you are sharing by link, select “Unlisted” and then hit “Save” at the bottom of the page.

In order to use the Email share option, your video must be either Unlisted, or set to Published and published to the MediaSpace channel (that is, the MiVideo site).

Either select “Unlisted” from the top three options, or else select “Publish” and check the checkbox next to the “MediaSpace” channel, which will always be first in the list of possible channels. Make sure you hit “Save” at the bottom of the page.

Once you have saved, to to the top left of the page, just below the banner, and click the “Back to Media Page” link. Now you will be able to select “Share” again and use any of the share options.
