Kaltura, also known as MiVideo or (inside Canvas) My Media, is the University of Michigan’s licensed platform to record, store, and play video.

Features

Kaltura, also known as MiVideo or (inside Canvas) My Media, is the University of Michigan’s licensed platform to record, store, and play video. Kaltura is available to both instructors and students, inside Canvas.

Instructional Uses

Lectures

Kaltura is very useful for recording lectures that focus primarily on you and your slides or screen. One of the features of Kaltura videos recorded with both screencapture and the computer’s webcam is that the viewer can switch which element is foregrounded back and forth. This is very helpful for students to may need to study slide details. Lecture videos can be easily shared with the whole course by embedding them in a content Page or by simply adding them to the course Media Gallery.

Video Quizzes

Kaltura includes a feature called In-Video Quizzing, in which the video owner can insert multiple choice, true/false, or short answer questions at any point in the video. This is useful for checking understanding of lecture videos, and can also be used to guide students through analysis or identification of a live demonstration.

Announcements and Course Feedback

Kaltura can also be used to record and share less formal videos, such as a course announcement, or your round-up of the week’s discussions if you run out of time for it during class. Such casual videos can be added on the spot, wherever you and your computer are.

Student Feedback and Projects

Since students can also record with Kaltura, and store videos in their own Kaltura accounts, this is an excellent tool for recording student responses in peer review assignments or presentations, if a student cannot be in class on their day to present.

Getting Started

To get started with Kaltura, you may wish to have a look at our short video tutorials on recording with Kaltura, or the how-to page. You may also want to have a look at our Tips for Good Home Recordings.

UofM ITS also provides video tutorials on using different features of Kaltura, including recording, editing, and the Canvas integration. Some of these are not customized for the Canvas integration, however, and may be confusing in places.

Learn how to share your Kalture/My Media Videos Outside of Canvas.
