About

Monika Dressler, Ph.D., has been Director of LSA Instructional Support Services since LSA ISS was first created in 2006. She leads largest instructional support unit on the UM campus, overseeing 239 classrooms, over 100 conference rooms, and multiple computer labs, check-out centers, and the LSA ISS Media Center. She is committed to the instructional mission of LSA and encourages every staff member in LSA ISS --from full-time to student temp staff-- to provide extraordinary customer service and facilitate exceptional instructional opportunities for UM faculty and students across every ISS service area: classroom support, equipment circulation and check-out, instructional technology consulting, design and installation of classroom technologies, special events support, training, and the creation of excellent teaching and learning environments online and in-person. Current initiatives include: campus migration to Canvas, team-based learning classrooms, lecture capture, video conferencing, media production, technologies to engage and connect students with global communities, BlueCorps support for students and faculty, promoting effective use of technology, and ensuring faculty have the approprriate resources to accomplish their instrutional goals.

Dr. Dressler oversees 45 full time regular staff and 70+ student workers and graduate media assistants. ISS staff include IT Professionals, Design and Engineering Staff, Instructional Technology Consultants, Media Production Staff, Program Staff, Media Consultants, AV Technicians, and Special Event Support Staff. Dr. Dressler also coordinates LSA Faculty Project Grant and New Initiatives/New Infrastructure Grant programs and is LSA CourseShare Coordinator to share courses across the Big 10 Academic Alliance (formerly known as the CIC). She enjoys a mentoring role in her work with the LSA Student Government advisory board to ISS (SG-TRACES); and works closely with LSA Undergrad Ed units, LSA academic departments, living learning programs, curricular and co-curricular support units, librarians, the Provost’s Office staff, the Registrar’s Office, and facility managers from LSA and other Schools and Colleges.

Dr. Dressler received her BA in German and Linguistics from Northwestern University and her MA and PhD in Germanic Linguistics from the University of Michigan.  She taught at Indiana University for two years before returning to the UM German Department in 1995.  She was appointed Director of the Language Resource Center in 1997.

Outside of work, she loves to garden and swim, is an active member of Ann Arbor First United Methodist Church, and volunteers for the Humane Society of Huron Valley fostering dogs since 2010.
