You asked! Canvas delivered! Section-Specific Announcements and Discussions Now Available

Canvas recently rolled out the ability to send section-specific announcements and create section-specific discussion boards.
by Rachel Kreager, Senior Instructional Consultant

Since making the transition to Canvas, many instructors have asked for the ability to send announcements to individual course sections and to create discussion boards specific to each course section.  The wait is finally over for those multi-section courses. Canvas recently rolled out section-specific announcements and discussions for Fall 2018.

Section-Specific Announcements

When creating an announcement, instructors can select to send the announcement to all sections, one section, or multiple sections.  By default, an announcement is set to post to all sections. In order to post to one or multiple sections, click the X next to all sections in the Post to box.  Then click inside the box to display all available sections.  Select the section(s) to post the announcement to.

Both the individual announcement and the Announcements page will display the section(s) that can view the announcement.

Section-Specific Discussions

When creating a discussion, instructors can select to assign a discussion post to all sections, one section, or multiple sections.  Like announcements, discussions are assigned to all sections by default.  To assign a discussion post to one or multiple sections, click the X next to all sections in the Post to box.  Then click inside the box to display all available sections.  Select the section(s) to assign the discussion to. Both the individual discussion and the Discussions page will display the section(s) that are assigned to complete the discussion post.
