On Monday April 18, 2016, ISS technician Joseph Popiolek supported a unique event in the Helmut Stern Auditorium at the University of Michigan Museum of Art. Students in Michael Byers’ English 346 class, American Sounds: Radio Drama and Comedy 1930-1962, performed three 15-minute radio dramas they had written, all in front of a live audience. Vintage microphones and authentic “Golden Age of Radio” special effects were employed to recreate everything from a dog barking to a train going down the tracks.
Part of the ISS Audio Consulting Group, Joe was charged with connecting the students’ sound system to the UMMA house PA and recording the event. But, when asked for his expert advice, he went above and beyond to set up and equalize the vintage microphones, and was credited during the “broadcast” for his expert assistance.
