U-M Telephone Project Update: Obtaining Headsets for Softphone Users

Free headsets available for softphone only users through the U-M Telephone Upgrade Project.
by Alyssa Longo, Administrative Assistant

Individuals who are only adopting a softphone are being identified by their department leaders and will receive an email with instructions and training links on how to migrate from their old desktop phone to the new softphone.

The email will also include information on how to order a free Logitech H390 Headset (USB 1.1 or 2.0) or Apple EarPods (3.5 mm headphone plug) for pick up from an ITS Tech Shop location or delivery to their campus office. Individuals must place the order themselves as part of their service adoption and set up to receive the free headsets.

It is important for departments to know that they do not need to bulk order or pay for their teams’ headsets/EarPods as they have done historically. There is currently no option for department leaders to coordinate a single, departmental request for free headsets/EarPods.

If you are requesting a deskset, you will receive a deskset phone instead of a headset. While the initial device will be delivered at no cost to the department, phone lines with desksets will pay a monthly equipment fee (currently $2.20/device/month). Reminder: Deskset users will be transitioned to the Zoom phone platform later in the project.
