New Hardware Vendor for Desktop PCs

The University of Michigan contract with HP is being replaced with a new strategic supplier relationship with Dell, effective 1/18/21.
by Josh Tishhouse, Technical Lead / Nancy Herlocher, Lead, Unit Engagement

An RFP evaluating our existing strategic supplier contract with HP and evaluating potential new partners has been underway since July of 2019. After an in-depth evaluation process by a cross-functional U-M team, Dell has been selected as the university’s new strategic supplier for computer hardware.

The new contract went into effect January 18, 2021 and replaced the current HP contract. The new contract with Dell—based on previous spending trends—is expected to save U-M $1 million annually on computer hardware expenses. In addition to significant annual savings, Dell offers a variety of other benefits to U-M, including enhanced catalog functionality, lead-time guarantees when placing orders, a faster build process, and customization options.
