NameCoach is Live via Canvas

Name pronunciation software now live via Canvas.
by Sean Green, Web and Application Development Services Manager

NameCoach is a web-based name pronunciation software that is now available to the University community via Canvas. The software allows users to record their own name, listen to and learn other people’s names. This helps support the university’s DEI initiative by promoting an inclusive learning and working environment across all three university campuses.

The software has two parts, the NameCoach Recorder and the NameCoach Roster. The Recorder is used to record people's names and the Roster allows users to listen to and learn people’s names in Canvas.

ITS will be adding more features for the U-M community in future releases. This functionality includes the ability to store preferred names, pronouns, and email signature integration.

While the University’s implementation is currently focused on the teaching and learning environment in Canvas, there will be other integrations with LSA applications. One of the first integrations will be with our people profile pages on LSA unit websites. Other possible integrations include the LSA Student File and other internal and public facing applications. ITS is also looking at integrations with MCommunity and SalesForce.

Please visit the ITS NameCoach Support Page for more information and give it a try so we can learn each other’s names! Aligning to our LSA value of Inclusion, NameCoach will help build a greater sense of community and belonging at the university.
