LSA Technology Services In-Person: Meet Steve Adams

Meet Steve Adams, Technical Assistance Group Coordinator for LSA Technology Services.
by Marciel Peres, Video Coordinator

Q: What is your background and how does it influence your work at LSA Technology Services?

A: Growing up, I always had a fascination with technology, specifically computers and video. By high school, I was building my own machines and tinkering with various software and hardware modifications (sometimes unsuccessfully). I got my degree in electronic communication at U-M Dearborn. During college, I worked at Circuit City as a Firedog Technician, fixing and installing both computing and AV equipment. All of those skills lead me to what was formerly Instructional Support Services as an AV Technician (temp) in 2009. The little bits of skills I picked up along the way in various fields of technology directly translate to the nature of our jobs here at LSA Technology Services, where we don’t quite know what kind of equipment we’ll be supporting when we take a call.

Q: What does a typical day look like for you in your position?

A: Our schedules vary day to day in Sight and Sound Operations. Most of us, even supervisors, don’t work typical 8 to 5, Monday through Friday, work-weeks. One day I may be working on phones for 10 hours, the next day I might have a half-day full of meetings. For most in Sight and Sound Operations, you’ll see our schedule posted in our calendars to indicate the hours we’re working that particular day and that will change semester to semester (and maybe even week to week).

Q: Are you working on any interesting projects right now?

A: Right now we’re working on a remote monitoring project for the classrooms that we support, which will hopefully allow us to take phone calls from patrons in our classrooms who are having issues and remotely manipulate the system to solve those problems without physically sending technicians to the space.

Q: What do you like to do outside of the office?

A: I have a bunch of hobbies, and not enough time for any of them. I like to golf, kayak, fish, mountain bike, camp, and attend all the home games for Michigan football.

Q: Finally, share something that people might be surprised to learn about you.

A: I don’t like any movie made prior to 1970.
