Google File Storage Limits: Finding Space

University of Michigan partnered with Google to offer their full suite of collaboration and productivity services available under their "Workspace for Education" plan (previously "G Suite for Education"). In 2021, Google announced a change to no longer offering free, unlimited storage and presented an institutional storage limit the University must meet by 2024. As a result of understanding the financial impact of the change, and seeing this type of change occurring across the cloud software and storage environment, U-M decided to shift to a different storage model for the University in order to minimize cost. U-M ITS began communicating with users who are impacted by the new storage limits. Storage limits were implemented on every account type on January 16, 2023, with a legacy period for existing users to migrate to the new model.


Below are the account options you may be using in Google. Current accounts are granted a temporary extension of limits that will end as listed in the table below.

You may have a shared account that has access to Google Photos and Drive storage, but it is not recommended to use that access, instead place files in a shared storage area.
