About
Hello! My name is Laine and I am a senior in the Residential College at UM double majoring in Creative Writing and Arts & Ideas in the Humanities with concentrations in mixed-genre and image/text work. I also have a minor in Linguistics. In my free time, I enjoy rock-climbing, making coffee, and working in the darkroom.
As a peer writing consultant, I focus on creating an accessible and comfortable environment for writers to share their concerns about what they have brought into Sweetland. I have done a lot of research on consulting those with neurodivergent identities, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder or ADHD. Because of this, I avoid unclear communication methods in my sessions, such as non-verbal cues, sarcasm, etc. I usually conduct my sessions in a private room to reduce distracting noise. I encourage students to fidget, stim, and not make eye contact during our sessions if it makes them more comfortable. My tutoring practices involve engaging with the student's strongest interests and their strongest skills because I believe this helps students feel more confident in their writing, and as a result, more confident in their revisions. I love listening to students who come into Sweetland and learning about their relationships with writing, and I like to discuss unique writing processes with them to spread awareness that there is not one particular way a person should approach writing a paper. I aim to help the writers I consult feel affirmed in consulting sessions so they may take that feeling with them after they leave the center and continue with their future work.
I look forward to working with you! My consulting hours are Mondays from 5-7pm virtually and Wednesdays/Thursdays from 8-10pm in Shapiro.
