Anne Ruggles Gere, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, Gertrude Buck Collegiate Professor, and Professor of English and Professor of Education, has agreed to continue as Director of the Sweetland Center for Writing for an additional five-year term through June 30, 2018.

Anne received her B.A. from Colby College, her M.A. from Colgate University and her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. A leader of the Joint Ph.D. Program in English and Education since 1989, she has received the D'Arms Award for Distinguished Graduate Student Mentoring, the Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award, and the Regents Award for Distinguished Public Service, a faculty fellowship at the Institute for the Humanities, and grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Spencer Foundation. She has published widely on literacy, composition and rhetoric. 

Her scholarship has been recognized with awards from the National Association of Women's Studies and the National Council of Teachers of English.  A past chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication and a past president of the National Council of Teachers of English, she has also served on the executive council of the Modern Language Association. Prior to her first term as Director of Sweetland, Anne served a five-year term on the Sweetland executive committee, and she has served many terms on the executive committees of the Department of English and the School of Education.
