M-Write Seminar for Engaged Learning

The M-Write Seminar brings together faculty and (if appropriate) graduate student instructors (GSIs) from multiple disciplines who share a commitment to using writing as a means of learning in large enrollment gateway courses.  Teams of faculty and GSIs are encouraged, but it is not necessary for a faculty member to be accompanied by a GSI.  However, GSIs can participate only as part of a faculty team. The seminar is supported by the College of Literature, Science & and Arts and the Sweetland Center for Writing.  Visit M-Write to learn more about the M-Write project.

All seminar participants share a commitment to:

  • Fostering more engaged learning in large enrollment courses
  • Employing writing as a means of learning
  • Implementing M-Write in a large enrollment course

In the fall term all seminar participants:

  • Meet on Fridays from 1-3 PM
  • Confer with experienced M-Write faculty
  • Discuss writing-to-learn pedagogies with colleagues
  • Develop prompts to be integrated into a specified course
  • Faculty receive $1,000 in a research account
  • GSIs receive a $1,000 stipend during fall term

When implementing M-Write in subsequent semesters instructors will receive:

  • Writing Fellow support (undergraduates who have previously excelled in the course and who are trained by Sweetland to assist with implementing writing to learn)
  • Support from M-Write staff
  • Access to the M-Write automated peer review system
  • Opportunities to confer with experienced M-Write faculty

Applying for the M-Write Seminar

Note: Faculty who wish to implement M-Write must participate in the Seminar

Application materials include:

  • A letter (maximum one page) indicating the course in which M-Write will be implemented, the rationale for implementing writing-to-learn pedagogies in this course, and (if applicable) an explanation of the role the GSI will play in the forthcoming course
  • Faculty cv (and GSI cv if appropriate)
