Writing Prizes - Nominate Students

Sweetland and the English Department Writing Program offer prizes for student writers in LSA. Sweetland’s prizes include: the Prize for Excellence in the Practice of Writing, the Prize for Excellence in Multilingual Writing, the Matt Kelley Prize for Excellence in First-Year Writing, and the Prize for Excellence in Upper-Level Writing. These prizes are awarded annually in the winter term, and winning entries are published both digitally and in hard copy to showcase excellence in writing across the College. Instructors nominate student writing for each of the prizes. View previous winners and read their winning work.

To nominate your student(s), complete the form below. Nominated students are contacted and invited to revise and submit their nominated work by the end of January. Winners are announced in February followed by an awards presentation in April. A full description of the prizes can be found below the nomination form. Prize for Excellence in the Practice of Writing

Instructors of WRITING 100 are invited to nominate outstanding students from any Writing 100 section taught in 2018 (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall). Please nominate up to two student essays by completing the form and attesting to the excellence of the essays. Two monetary prizes will be awarded and winning entries will be published in a Sweetland/English Department Writing Program collaborative volume collecting excellent first-year student writing.

Prize for Excellence in Multilingual Writing

Instructors of WRITING 120 are invited to nominate student essays that are innovative, complex and respond thoughtfully to an assignment in a 2018 course (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall). Please nominate up to three student essays by completing the form and attesting to each essay’s excellence. Two winning entries will each receive monetary prizes and will be published in a Sweetland/English Department Writing Program collaborative volume of excellent first-year student writing.

Matt Kelley Prize for Excellence in First-Year Writing

The Sweetland Center for Writing invites instructors of First-Year Writing Requirement courses to nominate student essays that are innovative, complex and respond thoughtfully to an assignment. Essays of 2,500 words or fewer for any 2018 course (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall) that fulfilled the LS&A First-Year Writing Requirement are eligible. Please nominate up to two student essays by completing the form and attesting to each essay’s excellence. Two winning entries will receive monetary prizes and will be published in a Sweetland/English Department Writing Program collaborative volume of excellent first-year student writing.

Prize for Excellence in Upper-Level Writing

The Sweetland Center for Writing invites instructors of Upper-Level Writing Requirement courses to nominate student essays that are innovative, complex and thoughtfully respond to an assignment. Essays should be from any 2018 course (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall) that fulfilled the LS&A Upper-Level Writing Requirement. Please nominate up to two student essays by completing the form and attesting to each essay’s excellence. Two winning entries will be selected in each of three areas: Science, Social Science, and Humanities. The winners will receive monetary prizes and will be published in a collection of excellent upper-level student writing.
