Qualitative Study on the Transition to Motherhood

Description of research project:
This project is a qualitative, interview-based study of the transition to first-time motherhood. The primary investigator (Charity Hoffman) has already completed 55 interviews with first-time mothers and care providers who work with them, and is interested in exploring factors that may help or hurt women as they transition into the role of new parent. She is currently working on a paper about structural factors (including parental leave policy, employer-employee relationship and socioeconomic class) that shape women’s adjustment to parenthood.

Description of work that will be assigned to research assistants:
Students would be expected to attend weekly meetings with primary investigator, and would in turn receive first-hand experience on a qualitative research project, as well as one-on-one mentoring from an experienced GSI & mentor.

Depending on student interest and current needs of the project, RA’s responsibilities could include:
-Transcribing and writing fieldnotes for interviews with new moms
-Learning to use Dedoose, a mixed methods qualitiative coding Software
-Coding data (reading transcripts of interviews, highlighting excerpts related to themes)
-Preliminary analysis of primary qualitative data
-Reviewing subfield of literature, and writing brief memos or annotated bibliographies
-Organizing research documents and literature
