What inspired you to major in Sociology?

As a freshman, I was inspired by the idea of sociology and the wide range of classes the department had to offer. Sociology seemed to be applicable to any future endeavor I decided to pursue. The Law, Justice and Social Change submajor allowed me to narrow my focus and discover what I truly passionate about.

What classes have you most enjoyed? Why?

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the classes I have taken through the Sociology department (part of what makes the major so great!). However, Sociology 404 with Professor Pedraza was one of my favorite classes that I have taken at the University of Michigan. Her dedication to, passion for, and knowledge about Latin American social movements was reflected in our seminar. I appreciated the opportunity to discuss historical and contemporary movements from a sociological standpoint. This class pushed me to think outside the box and see policy from a new perspective, something that has continued to be valuable in my other academic courses.

What do you hope to do after graduating from Michigan?

Studying Sociology has helped me discover my passion for law and the United States Justice System. After graduation, I hope to continue to gain more exposure to the legal field and attend law school. I have accepted a position with the New York County District Attorney’s Office and am excited to utilize the skills I developed as a sociology student.

Have you participated in an internship or research experience?

In SOC 396, I had the opportunity to evaluate one of my legal internships in a sociological research paper. This allowed me to expand on a wonderful experience by analyzing my role through an academic lens.

What advice would you give to students considering a major in Sociology at U-M?

Sociology is a unique discipline that can be applied to almost anything. It is an excellent way to better understand how society functions. I would encourage all students to take advantage of this department and the wide variety of classes offered by its amazing faculty.
