About
Rion Berger serves as the Program Manager for the Semester in Detroit program. Having spent their formative years growing up on Detroit's Eastside prior to moving to Grosse Pointe for high school, Rion is passionate about helping students to engage with the city with humility.
Rion graduated from the Residential College in 2016 with highest honors in Social Theory and Practice and German. For their STP senior thesis project, Rion wrote about the radical roots of self-care in activist communities of color, contrasting the history of the movement with the current self-care industry. As the Program Manager for SiD, Rion encourages students to participate in whatever form of self-care helps them process their semester of critical thinking and personal reflection. Rion is always happy to meet with students for coffee to talk over anything and everything emerging in students' lives.
In their free time, Rion is passionate about reading, basketball, baking, working on house projects with their housemates, and cats.
