The LSA Scholarships Office awards a small number of International Student Scholarships each year to incoming LSA students. These awards are renewable for four years of study and recipients are selected based on information provided through their scholarship application and their undergraduate admissions application.
International students admitted to the College of LSA should complete the International Student Scholarship application as soon as possible to ensure they are considered for these limited opportunities. Read on to learn more about our International Student Scholarships and the application process for incoming international students.
What does the scholarship cover?
For qualified LSA students, the International Student Scholarship covers educational expenses such as tuition, room and board, and textbooks.
Amounts and Duration
Award amounts can go up to 10,000 USD. All International Student Scholarships are renewable for four years of undergraduate study, provided students maintain eligibility by completing their requirements each academic year.
The International Student Scholarship Application for the 2021-2022 academic year will open February 1 and close on April 30. Decisions will be made on a rolling basis through mid to late April. The sooner a student applies, the better their chances of receiving a scholarship.
To qualify for an International Student Scholarship, a student:
- Must be an undergraduate admitted to a degree program in the College of LSA. Students will be considered even if they haven't enrolled yet.
- Must NOT be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
- Must be enrolled (or intend to enroll) full-time (12 credit hours or more) each term.
To maintain their International Student Scholarship, a student:
- Must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
- Must complete at least 20 hours of volunteer service over the course of each academic year.
- Must write a thank you letter to the donor of their scholarship, if applicable.*
- Must attend the Scholarship Orientation that occurs during their first fall semester.**
- Must attend any special events where their scholarship donor will also be in attendance.**
*Not all scholarships require a thank you letter. Students will receive instructions to complete their thank you letter if it is a requirement of their scholarship.
**Our office will provide details to students as these requirements arise.
How do I apply?
The application process has four steps.

Yes, you must be admitted to the College of LSA to apply for LSA Scholarships. You will not be able to access our International Student Scholarship application until you are admitted.
How do I verify a Friend Account?
If you are an admitted student and already have a Friend Account, you will still need to authorize it to use university systems.
To authorize the account, go to Wolverine Access. Click on the Students tab, then on New & Prospective Student Business, and log in using your Friend Account ID and password. Verify your personal information, including your eight-digit UMID, which was emailed to you, as well as your birth date.
Once you have requested your Friend Account and authorized it, you will have access to our application system (plus a number of other university systems).
Note: Once you create a new Friend Account and authorize it by verifying your personal information, it may take 24-48 hours for your new account information to migrate to our application system, granting you access to the application. You may also need to clear your cache once you have finished verifying your information.
What if I don't have a Friend Account?

Verify your personal information, including your eight-digit UMID, which was emailed to you, as well as your birth date.

I received an error when logging in to the LSA Scholarships Portal. Can you help?
If you are an admitted student and receive an error when attempting to log in to the LSA Scholarships portal, first check to make sure you are logging in with your Friend Account ID and password. Then, make sure you have followed all the steps to authorize your Friend Account so that you can access university systems. Instructions to do this are included above under the question: How do I verify a Friend Account?
If you still encounter errors after completing those steps, try clearing your browser's cache or logging in with a different browser entirely. If these actions don't correct the issue, you may contact LSA IT for assistance at 734.615.0100. Be sure to have your UMID ready when you call.
NOTE: If you have enrolled, make sure you are using your new uniqname and password to log in. If you very recently paid your enrollment deposit and have noticed that you cannot log in to view or update your application, there can sometimes be a delay while our systems integrate your new uniqname information. Wait a few days and try again. If you continue to experience issues, please email us with a screenshot of the error so we can help troubleshoot.
