About
Kayla Skinner-Roy is the Program Specialist for the Kessler Scholars Program at Michigan. In her role, Kayla develops experiential learning opportunities for first-generation college students that promote high-impact practices, holistic well-being, community engagement, and resource exploration. As a first-generation college graduate, Kayla is deeply passionate about advancing education equity and building affirming spaces on campus for underrepresented students. She's a practitioner of critical pedagogy and works collaboratively with students to design and implement representative workshops and dynamic student leadership experiences.
Prior to coming to the University of Michigan, Kayla worked as a case manager at a Minneapolis area high school, where she provided wraparound support services to students struggling to succeed in conventional education. She is a current MSW student at Eastern Michigan University and is especially interested in exploring the ways in which expressive forms of therapy (art, music, drama, play) might work in concert with community-based learning to enhance student well-being.
