About
My research and teaching interests focus in the medieval and early modern Iberia, with an emphasis on the consequences of the long history of conflict and cooperation between Christians, Jews, and Muslim within for the kingdoms of Castile and Portugal.
I am particularly interested in the evolution of Castilian conceptualization of religious alterity in relation to of ideas about Asia and the legacy of al-Andalus. To address this issue, I study the intersection of ideas about translation, travel, and historiography in Castile from the 13th to the 15th century with a critical framework informed by post-colonial and global studies. My dissertation project on this subject was awarded a Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship for the course 2019-2020.
I have advanced results from this project at the 2019 MLA Convention, the 2017 International Congress of Medieval Studies at Kalamazoo, and the Symposium "De-Centering the Global Middle Ages" (University of Michigan, 2019), among other academic presentations in U.S. and Spain.
The Executive Committee of the MLA Forum LLC Medieval Iberian granted my 2019 article the first ever honorable mention for the John K. Walsh Award “to the author of an outstanding article published in the previous volume of La Corónica.”
