I study the role of fauna in the literature and culture of Early Modern Spain by analyzing the symbolic importance of animal presence and early ecological concerns in natural history treaties, emblem books, and theater. Currently, I am focusing on the literary representation of whales and how it not only reveals perspectives of social and cultural realities but also points to complexities about the female body, the relationship between humans and nature, and the unknown.
