Lima, Peru, was the first American place to offer hope to Diego de Ocaña. This Spanish Hieronymite alms-collector and orchestrator of devotion travelled in the name of Our Lady of Guadalupe de Extremadura, enjoying two lengthy sojourns in the city, in 1599-1600 and in 1604-1605. In Lima -- a place seemingly brimming with rise and confidence, wealthy pious donors, saintly persons and the prospect of alms for new sacred foundations -- a stage was set. Professor Mills will explore one facet of Ocaña's investigations and integration of himself, his Virgin and purpose into contemporary Lima's beating heart.
