About
David Thomas Burkam, Ph.D., is a Lecturer IV in the Residential College. He is the co-author of Inequality at the Starting Gate (2002) in addition to articles in academic journals, chapters in books, and entries in encyclopedias. His research includes equity issues in kindergarten and early schooling, gender equity in math and science, high school curriculum structure, and measurement issues in student course taking and achievement.
David currently teaches courses on the sociology of education, poverty, social science thinking, the millennial and gen-z generations, LGBT history, love, and the Tarot. He is also the academic advisor for the Urban Studies minor.
He received UM’s Ruth M. Sinclair Memorial Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Academic Advising and the Residential College Excellence in Teaching Award and was cited for creating interdisciplinary courses that bridge the gap between mathematics, the social sciences, and the humanities.
