Alex Elkins is a Lecturer in the Residential College and Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS). He is currently writing a book on the history of urban policing and rioting in US cities from 1943 to 1971. His research and teaching interests include the history of cities, policing, incarceration, crime, race and inequality, and politics in the twentieth-century United States. In the Residential College, he commonly teaches the First-Year Seminar, a writing-intensive class focusing on policing and incarceration. In DAAS, he teaches classes on African-American history. He also works as a union organizer for the Lecturers' Employee Organization.
