Huda Bashir joined the QMSS team in Winter 2022 as a new GSI for QMSS 301. Huda is a dual Master’s student at the School of Public Health with a focus in General Epidemiology and the Ford School of Public Policy. Before coming to the University of Michigan, she attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison, where she graduated with degrees in Religious Studies, Languages and Cultures of Asia, and Portuguese, with additional certifications in Middle East Studies, African Studies, and Global Studies.

Huda was originally planning to be a medical doctor, but came to realize that the existing patient-doctor dynamic wasn’t for her. She wanted to work in an area that was proactive at preventing health issues, rather than just reactive in treating them. In her senior year, she became exposed to Public Health and became interested. During an Americorp term of service, she met a colleague with a degree in Public Policy and started seeing connections.

Given that the University of Michigan is one of the only schools to offer a dual degree in Public Health specifically in epidemiology and Public Policy, it was a natural fit for Huda. “Epidemiology offers a lot of analysis, but many epidemiologists don’t think about practical application. Public Policy bridges that gap between analysis and implementation.” Through Ford, she’s friends with fellow GSI Hannah Krauss, who told her about the QMSS Program. When she saw the GSI posting for this semester, she was eager to apply, both to help QMSS students learn and deepen her own understanding. We are lucky to have Huda on the team, and students benefit greatly from her passion and desire to find applicable and socially useful conclusions in data.
