Professor Emeritus of Social Work, Assistant to The Dean, School of Social Work and Professor Emeritus of Psychology
About
Jesse E. Gordon joined the faculty as associate professor of social work in 1964, having been on the psychology faculty since 1959. One of the school's leading instructors in the area of research, Gordon played a major role in the integration of research and clinical practice. His teaching areas included research methods in interpersonal practice, utilization of knowledge in direct practice, and comparative theories of personality.
While at Michigan, Professor Gordon carried out projects for the U.S. Department of Labor, focusing on the Youth Opportunity Program and on training materials for employment agency personnel. He served on numerous committees to which he was elected by his colleagues. His knowledge of funding sources and grantmanship led to securing research grants and contracts for the university community. Included in Professor Gordon's extensive publication record is the college-level text Personality and Behavior.
Professor Gordon was named professor emeritus of social work and of psychology in 1993. Prior to and during retirement, he served the school as "overseer" in the completion and operation of the new School of Social Work building.
