Even something as simple as a friendly social interaction can be important to our brain. Oscar Ybarra, a psychologist and researcher at the Institute for Social Research at U-M studied social interaction and its impact on cognition. He found that brief episodes of positive social contact had benefits for working memory, self-monitoring, and the ability to suppress distractions.
