Undergraduate Internship Program

The physics department at the University of Michigan offers an internship program for our undergraduate students in physics.  Professional physicists are ubiquitous in the private sector.  An industrial internship is an extremely rewarding and useful experience.  You will learn what work is like in industry, obtain valuable skills that apply to any future career, and make valuable professional connections which can be very useful for getting your first job.  The goal of this program is to guide a cohort of our undergraduate majors through the process of applying for internship positions.  The program consists of the following steps:

The program consists of the following parts:

1. (Early September) Students first go through a workshop run by the LSA Opportunity Hub where they will build a resume and a cover letter in preparation for applying to positions.

2.(Sometime in the Fall) We will bring in a panel of alumni currently working in industry where students will be able to ask questions about jobs, what life is like in the private sector, and how best to prepare and obtain positions there.

3. (Late September) Students will identify a list of at least 10 internship positions that they would like to apply for, noting deadlines and any other pertinent information.  We have connections to over 100 companies that are interested in physics majors, as well as partnerships with local companies/startups that regularly hire students.

4. (Late September and beyond) Students apply to these positions - we will provide program participants accountability to ensure they are making good progress in their applications.

5. (Late October/Early November) Students will participate in a workshop run by the LSA Opportunity Hub on successful interviewing for jobs.

A Slack channel will be put together for each cohort to provide a forum for questions, support, and advice.  We will also provide our students with guidance in navigating the department LinkedIn page for undergraduate students and alumni.

All current or ‘intending’ physics majors will be admitted to this program.  Just fill out the short application form below:
