Upcoming Solo Art Exhibition Featuring PCAP Linkage Artist Martin Vargas

PCAP is excited to present solo art exhibition Painting His Way Home, featuring Linkage artist Martin Vargas, at Detroit Street Filling Station. The exhibition opens on Wednesday October 17, 2018 with a reception at 5:30 p.m..

Martin Vargas is a self-taught artist who spent 45 years in prison for a crime committed when he was 17 years old. Martin’s work was displayed at the Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners for 23 consecutive years. In 2017, Martin’s work The Lifer was presented at the University of Michigan as a gift to Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

In February, 2018, Martin came home to his wife Barbara and his community who welcomed him with balloons, gifts, and warm greetings. Martin now lives in Grand Ledge where he enjoys a normal life with his wife. Martin has since had two solo art exhibits in Lansing and is currently featured in Kites above the Razor Wire, an exhibition at the College of Creative Studies in Detroit.

In this exhibition, you will see a diverse range of subjects that Martin incorporates in his art, from the pudgies, characters Martin created to symbolize a world where all are created equal, to Martin’s own Chicano cultural heritage. If you would like to purchase or commission Martin’s work, prints or original, you could reach him at martinvargas@wowway.com
