The Social Impact of Constitutional Law and Political Action
While my interest has always been in Constitutional law and rights, I have come to realize that a true understanding of the subject involves going beyond the text of the law itself. It also involves understanding how rights manifest themselves, including how the lack of respect for rights can lead organizations to perpetuate systemic inequality. This can be addressed through courses that analyze the policymaking processes, legal institutions, and history, allowing me to track the progression and implementation of rights in society. Through studying these institutions and processes, I hope to gain an understanding of how organizational and societal structures can be more conducive to protecting people's rights.
I also hope to gain a deeper understanding of how political organizations mobilize their members and resources to create social change; why some choose to utilize the media, demonstrations, or litigation, and why some strategies are more effective than others. This not only can take the form of courses that directly study the impact of interest groups on the policymaking process, but also courses that explore topics like effective negotiation strategies or the role of nonprofits. The defense of rights is not limited to lawyers in a courtroom. Instead, social change has been driven primarily by passionate citizens and organizations. The best way to gain a comprehensive understanding of Constitutional law is to understand how people have worked within networks and organizations to influence its progression.
