Cross-Cultural Communication and Strategy: Managing Organizations Across Borders, Languages, and Cultures
Having a strong interest in foreign language, literatures, and cultures, I can’t help but feel a deep appreciation for how the abilities to speak another language and learn another culture allow us to connect with countless more people and opportunities. At the same time, though, I think a lot about the challenges of coming from different cultural backgrounds, of speaking different languages, and of having to navigate all these obstacles. How do the political and social implications of speaking a certain language in a particular region affect someone’s ability to travel, to work, to get things done? To what extent is a university’s or business’s or non-profit’s efficiency hindered by its ability to connect with its employees and customers on a cultural and linguistic level? How can advertisements be more culturally relevant? How do the nuances of local custom influence the dynamic between an organization’s leadership and its team members? Between company and client? These questions are what have driven me to mold my coursework to focus on addressing cross-cultural communication and strategy. I want to help companies and organization better navigate their multicultural and multinational statuses, and I want to help them recognize these challenges as means of enriching their organization. Communication is the root of all interaction, and I am deeply passionate about finding the best means of communication for people across borders, languages, cultures, and identities.
