Facilitating Effective Cross-Cultural Communication in the Workplace to Promote Positive Organizational Change
The spread of technology has increased the global interconnectivity of the world, meaning that we now interact more closely with humans from across the globe. These interactions are becoming especially more frequent in business and professional settings, as individuals of diverse backgrounds face new challenges to successfully accomplish common goals. As someone who grew up in a bicultural family and has experience navigating two cultural worlds, I firmly believe that diversity within companies and organizations is essential. However, I would argue that much of the benefit of collaborating with diverse individuals is lost when members of an organization lack the necessary tools to effectively communicate with one another. By taking courses in Psychology and Organizational Studies, my goal is to better understand the characteristics of an organization which facilitate positive intercultural communication. In addition to majoring in Organizational Studies, my minor in French coupled with my Spanish fluency will allow me to serve as a liaison between people of different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Through this pathway, I hope to pursue a career in human resources. I believe that my knowledge in effective communication strategies and successful cross-cultural interaction will allow me to moderate misinterpretations and promote a positive work environment.
