Detroit Community Based Research

The Detroit Community Based Research Program (DCBRP) is a summer internship program run through the University of Michigan Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program that places students with community based organizations in full-time research positions. Students conduct research projects addressing issues such as social and environmental justice, food security, human rights, urban development, public health, youth development, and sustainability. Semester in Detroit

The Semester in Detroit mission is to engage U-M undergraduates in substantive, sustained and reciprocal relationships with the people and communities of the City of Detroit. Combining a semester-long residence in the city with rigorous academic study and a comprehensive community-based internship, SiD students become deeply involved in – and committed to – the life, challenges, and promise of this important American city. Fish and Our Economy

“Fish. While I love to consume it, I wouldn’t say that I thought that seafood policy would necessarily be my forte. However, my internship at the National Fisheries Institute has continued to show me that there is much more than meets the eye to fish in Washington. These issues are not as simple as overstock and understock or recreational vs. commercial. NFI has shown me that seafood issues are often tied to larger trade issues, and as a trade policy hopeful this has given me a lot of valuable experience in that sphere... This internship has been incredibly eye-opening in understanding how and to whom lobbyists make their case for the policies they push for. It is enriching to spend the time researching the issue, creating supporting documents and analyses, and then being able to sit in on those subsequent meetings and see your mentor really work the issue.” Read more.
