Name: Amir Joseph

Year: Senior

Majors: Biopsychology, Cognition and Neuroscience

Internship: REAL Kids Operational Team Intern at DREAM School

What: Joseph works with students in kindergarten through third grade at a Harlem charter school devoted to offering resources to underserved students.

Harlem feels like a “home away from home” to Joseph. Growing up in Romulus, Michigan, he observed a community struggling with the same issues. “In a way, they’re both a lot better than they used to be but there are still improvements that need to be made,” he said.

It’s part of what informed his decision to apply for an operational internship at DREAM, a New York City charter school that offers programing and resources for underserved students. He also wanted to see his biopsychology, cognition and neuroscience major in action outside the lecture halls.

A lot of what I learned makes me better able to empathize with people and understand child development. I’m considering going into social work and this tied into that goal,” Joseph said. “But I’m not set on that—this is helping me explore different career options."

The internship was sourced by @umichlsahub, where coaches and coordinators worked with Joseph to figure out the right summer opportunity for him.
