Alum Connection with Cristina Shoffner: Growing an Environmental Policy Career in D.C.

Wednesday, November 2, 2022
12:00-1:00 PM
A DC-area native, Cristina came to Michigan knowing she wanted to use her degree to help fight climate change. She studied Earth & Environmental Science and filled the rest of her schedule with lab work and policy classes in the Ford School. This multidisciplinary approach readied her for a successful environmental policy career in Washington. Cristina jumped from Michigan’s Climate Change Lab, to the White House Council on Environmental Quality. Her career has only blossomed from there, leading her to the U.S. Senate and now Breakthrough Energy, Bill Gates’s climate organization. Join Cristina to learn how she has leveraged her UM degree to advance climate action in the federal government and philanthropy.

About Cristina:
Cristina is a manager of strategic initiatives for Breakthrough Energy’s U.S. Policy and Advocacy team. In this role, she supports partnership and strategy development to advance Breakthrough Energy’s advocacy on an ambitious U.S. climate and clean energy policy agenda.

Cristina joined Breakthrough Energy from the United States Senate, where she served as policy advisor to U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow and Senate Democratic Leadership. There, she supported the Senator’s energy and environmental policy agenda and broader efforts as chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee. Before serving in the U.S. Senate, Cristina was Special Assistant for Legislative Affairs in the White House Council on Environmental Quality under President Obama.

Cristina received her B.S. with honors from the University of Michigan in Earth and Environmental Science and Spanish. She lives in Washington, D.C.
