What is the LSA Opportunity Hub?
The LSA Opportunity Hub is a team of 30-plus professionals who work with students on one of the most important projects of their lives: forming a professional identity. We do that by encouraging LSA students to explore and articulate the connection between their liberal arts education and their goals and aspirations. You can learn more about how here.
What is the difference between the Hub and other career-related offices on campus?
Our focus is on serving LSA undergraduate students from a liberal arts perspective. Our campus partners serve wider or different audiences, including the University Career Center, which serves the entire campus, and the offices in U-M’s colleges, like the Engineering Career Resource Center, which serves Engineering students specifically.
Is there a way I can sign up for “Hub updates” to stay informed about what’s happening?
You can sign up for our twice-monthly newsletter in MCommunity and see the latest communication with students.
How do students find out about the Hub and your activities?
We communicate with students via email, social media, in print, and in-person to ensure they get the complete picture of opportunities available to them at the Hub.
What kind of contributions do you need most?
We’re looking for alumni who can provide wisdom gleaned from their particular experiences about the industry they’re in, whether they’re in the first year or the thirtieth of their career. We’re always looking for volunteers to participate in our Alumni Connections, sessions where students can talk with alumni in a small group setting, and in our internships and flash internships, hands-on learning experiences ranging from two days to a full summer. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to get started.
What is the time commitment like?
It ranges based on an alum’s availability; it can be as short as one hour on a Friday while they are visiting campus for a football game, or as long as a summer internship commitment or mentoring relationship.
If I have contacts that are alums and they want to be involved in the Hub, who should I refer them to?
I would be happy to mentor an LSA student. Where do I sign up?
Our online program, debuting in spring 2019, will provide the ease of a social media platform to the process of providing mentorship to students. Check back here for updates on how to join.
In what ways can I engage beyond financial giving?
Alumni time and wisdom is as valuable to the LSA Opportunity Hub as financial gifts; check out the ways alumni can contribute.
Can you help me create an internship position for an LSA student?
We have a team of people who are experienced in developing internship opportunities with organizations of all kinds. We’d be happy to connect you and provide guidance on designing an opportunity in your organization.
How does the LSA Opportunity Hub match students with internship providers?
Our targeted marketing ensures the right students see the right opportunities, and our coaching and courses mean they’re prepared to make the most of the opportunity once they do get there.
What kinds of organizations can offer internships?
You can learn details about the structure of the internships we’re looking for here.
How do you work with employers and recruiters in the Hub?
Ben Anderson, our director of employer development, works one-on-one with recruiters to provide meaningful opportunities to meet students.
