Yenching Academy

Overview and Introduction

The Yenching Academy provides full tuition plus a generous stipend to cover travel and living expenses for a 2-year Masters's program in China Studies at Peking University in Beijing.  

As a college integrated within China’s leading university, The Yenching Academy prepares a diverse group of up to 150 exceptional international and Chinese students with the knowledge of China that they need to fulfill their potential as global citizens and leaders.

The first-year curriculum offers an intensive program of interdisciplinary classroom and field study of Chinese history and culture, as well as real-time issues in China’s development. The second-year provides a living stipend to complete a thesis, an internship, and other immersive experiences.  

Campus Application Deadline: November 10th, 2024 at 11:59pm ET


  • Degree-Level: Graduating seniors or alumni, no strict age requirement.
  • Academics: 3.6 GPA required, but higher recommended
  • Citizenship: No requirement, but deadlines and processes may differ depending on if applicant is international or a citizen of Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, or China.

Selection Criteria:

  • Outstanding academic record
  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary study of China
  • Record of extracurricular achievement and community engagement
  • Social responsibility and leadership potential

  • U-M Deadline: November 10th, 2024 at 11:59pm ET
  • National Deadline: Mid-December
  • Endorsement: U-M Nomination is Required

Instructions for Prospective Applicants 

Prospective applicants should join the U-M Nominated Scholarships and Fellowships Canvas course for an overview of the application, program requirements, additional advising information, and more.  

Note: Non-native English speakers are required to provide English proficiency test scores.

Application Components 

  1. Completed online application form
  2. Personal statement (750 words or less)
  3. Statement of Research Interest (1500 word maximum, excluding citations)
  4. Resume/Curriculum Vitae
  5. Transcript(s)
  6. 2 academic letters of recommendation


  • Academics: No minimum GPA, but most successful applicants have at least a 3.7. 
  • Citizenship: No requirement. 
  • Degree-Level: Graduating seniors and new alums, no strict age requirement. 
  • Other: Citizens of the People's Republic of China are not eligible and should apply direclty to Peking University instead.

  • Campus Deadline: Second Monday of November by 12:00 noon EDT
  • Endorsement:  The Yenching Academy requires an institutional endorsement for consideration.  See instructions below to apply for U-M endorsement.  
  • Finalist Interviews: January 
  • Selection Notification: early February
