Truman Scholarship

Overview and Introduction

Founded in 1975 as a living memorial to our thirty-third President, the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation provides up to $30,000 for the graduate education and professional development of outstanding young people committed to public service leadership. 

The Foundation is bipartisan and defines public service broadly as working for the common good.  Students in a wide variety of academic fields are encouraged to apply. 

Campus Application Deadline: December 1st, 2024 at 11:59pm


  • Degree-Level: Junior standing with full-time enrollment
  • Academics: No requirement, but at least a 3.7 GPA recommended
  • Citizenship: US citizenship required

Selection Criteria:

  • Leadership abilities and potential
  • Commitment and desire for a career in public service
  • Intellect and ability to succeed in graduate school

Application Deadlines

  • U-M Deadline: December 1st, 2024 at 11:59pm
  • National Deadline: Early February
  • Endorsement: U-M Nomination is Required

Application Components

  1. Three letters of recommendation
  2. Fill out the Truman Application on the Truman website to upload to our U-M application system, which includes question categories: Awards and Leadership, Public Service, Graduate Studies & Beyond, and a Policy Proposal.
