Zhiquan Sun wins U-M STEM Research Career Award
Zhiquan Sun is the inaugural recipient of the U-M STEM Research Career Award. An international student from Jinan, China, Zhiquan is a rising senior double majoring in Honors Physics and Honors Mathematics. The STEM Research Career Award provides $5000 to an outstanding U-M sophomore or junior who plans to pursue a research career in a STEM field. Students are selected on the basis of academic excellence (particularly in their STEM major courses), demonstrated research potential in U-M and external summer research projects, and commitment to expanding the endeavor of science through teaching, tutoring/mentoring, or diversity outreach initiatives. Zhiquan has worked on detecting axion dark matter through radio signals produced by neutron star magnetospheres with Prof. Ben Safdi (Physics) and on technical specifications for the DESI (Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument) project with Profs. Michael Schubnell and Greg Tarle (Physics). She is also a grader for Physics 405 (Electromagnetism) and tutor for Math 217 (linear algebra). This summer Zhiquan is working on her Honors thesis in Physics as a member of the Honors Summer Fellows program.
