Two of our students, Megan Cansfield and Gabriel Lerner, have been named scholars of the Yenching Academy!  The Yenching Academy brings together a cohort of 150 students from around the world for a two-year master’s degree in China Studies at Peking University in Beijing, China. 

Megan is an LSA alumna who is currently living in Beijing on a Fulbright.  While a student at Michigan, Megan triple majored in International Studies, Political Science, and Asian Studies and says that she hopes to “build on my experience at Yenching by continuing to engage with China and promote international cooperation through a diplomatic career as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer.”  Other notable achievements are as follows:

Gabriel is a Public Policy senior and plans to concentrate on economics and management while at Yenching, where he says he hopes to study comparative income inequality in China and in the United States.  While an undergraduate, Gabriel has particpated in and has achieved the following opportunities:  

  • Barger Institute Fellow
  • Co-Founder of U-M's WeListen
  • Served as the President of the National Leadership Council
  • Intern in the Parliament of Canada
  • Served as an Office of Presidential Correspondence Intern for Obama's White House
  • Served as a Democratic staff intern on the U.S. House of Representatives Budget Committee
  • Summer intern with Bain & Company Global Management Consulting
