About

Dr. Jude Paul Matias Dizon is an Assistant Professor of Higher Education Leadership at California State University, Stanislaus. His research focuses on the relationship between higher education and the carceral state, with attention to racial inequity. Dr. Dizon is a proud first-generation college student and son of Filipino immigrant postal service workers.

Current Work

Dr. Dizon's scholarship examines policing on college campuses. His work addresses the dearth of evidence regarding the non-crime consequences of policing on college campuses. Dr. Dizon recently conducted an in-depth case study of policing at a campus with one of the largest campus police departments in the nation, and interviewed campus police, students, staff, and faculty. The findings provide insight into the ways campus police shape the racial climate and reinforce criminalizing, racist stereotypes of Black and Latinx students. The study also discusses the limits of popular police reforms in higher education, such as cultural competency trainings and diverse hiring initiatives. To better address contemporary critiques of campus police and calls to divest or abolish them, Dr. Dizon's research speaks to the need to enact campus-wide change to better address racial inequities related to campus police. His research provides a pathway to reconciling campus safety and diversity goals.
