Assistant Professor of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond
About
Volha Chykina is an assistant professor of leadership studies in the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond. Her research examines the factors that drive educational inequality in the United States and cross-nationally. Her past work addresses how the educational policies and characteristics of immigrant and minority students' communities affect their educational outcomes.
Current Work:
Volha's current work extends this research by examining how marginalized students are affected by other contextual factors, such as campus climate. Together with colleagues across multiple institutions, she is working on constructing the Campus Human Rights Index, an innovative effort to create the first comprehensive ranking of university commitments to human rights, social justice, and diversity, equity, and inclusion for more than 300 universities in the US. Once the Index is created, she plans to examine whether being on college campuses that are more human rights- and social justice-oriented leads to better educational outcomes of minority students who attend these institutions.
