About
Valerie Francisco received her PhD from the department of sociology at City University of New York, The Graduate Center. She is an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Portland. She works with a global perspective both in her scholarship and teaching. Dr. Francisco's research projects include a transnational study of Filipino migrant mothers in New York City and their families left behind in Manila, and participatory action research with Filipino immigrants working as caregivers in the US.
Current Work:
Currently, in partnership and collaboration with the Filipino caregivers of MIGRANTE Northern California, the Filipino Community Center in San Francisco, CA and Dr. Robyn Rodriguez from UC Davis, Dr. Francisco is working on a participatory action research project called Caregiver Research (CARE) Project. The CARE in CARE Project stands for Caregiver Research. The project's primary goal is to collect the stories of caregivers to the elderly to analyze industry work experiences and conditions. The CARE Project will train caregivers and other community members how to do research about their work conditions and their lives as a form of leadership development towards building organizing capacity to address the issues that emerge from the research.
