Current Work:
Currently, Dr. Carey is working on a number of projects exploring the psychological, social, and political consequences of citizens' interactions with police forces. Overall, they demonstrate that living in contexts where there are a large number of police killings can have deleterious effects on citizens'-but particularly Black Americans'- psychological status, social orientations, and political agency and engagement. Yet, living in neighborhoods where community-oriented policing services are enforced with fidelity improve Black citizens' perceptions of police performance and trust in local government. This work is being developed into a book manuscript tentatively entitled, Lethal Forces: How Police Tactics Shape American Civic Life.
