About
Shi-Yan Chao is a research assistant professor in the Academy of Film at Hong Kong Baptist University. He holds a PhD in cinema studies at New York University, and has taught classes at NYU and Columbia University. Dr. Chao has published various articles on Chinese-language film and media in anthologies and academic journals. His monograph on Chinese-language queer cinema is forthcoming from Amsterdam University Press.
Current Work:
Dr. Chao's scholarship mainly fits in the domain of film and media studies, intersected by a number of focuses. As his publications and teaching show, they include Chinese-language cinemas, gender/queer studies, documentary films, contemporary film/media industries, early film histories, and the genres of fantasy, horror, martial arts and melodrama. He is currently writing on queer indies from Taiwan and Hong Kong. His two upcoming cooperative projects shall focus on Taiwan experimental film and Asian queer cinemas.
