Dr. Shantel Gabrieal Buggs is an assistant professor of sociology and African American studies at Florida State University. She received her PhD in sociology from The University of Texas at Austin, with additional doctoral portfolios in African and African diaspora studies and women's and gender studies. She completed her MA (University of Houston) and BA (Duke University) in sociology as well. Follow her research progress and other topics of interest on Twitter at @sgbuggs.
Current Work:
Dr. Buggs is currently writing and/or pursuing data collection for several active research projects. Her primary work focuses on multiraciality: her main research project addresses mixed-race women’s online dating experiences, particularly in the midst of the social and political upheaval in 2015-2016 and in 2020. She is collaborating on another project exploring racial perception of multiracials in interracial relationships.
Another research strain focuses on academia: Dr. Buggs is engaged in a collaborative project on women of color and nonbinary people of color’s experiences on the academic job market and another collaborative project on Black faculty and tenure. Finally, Dr. Buggs is collaborating on an oral history of Florida State’s Black Student Union, unpacking the significance of space and place for Black identity and community at PWI.
In addition to these research projects, Dr. Buggs is currently co-editing a special issue of Teaching Sociology focused on "Teaching Sexualities" as well as an edited volume of essays exploring queering consent in the Me Too era, which is under contract at Rutgers University Press.
