Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Utah
About
Ramón Barthelemy, PhD, is a former Fulbright and American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science Policy Fellow dedicated to equity and inclusion in STEM. Dr. Barthelemy’s work has included studying the experiences of women in graduate physics and astronomy, LGBT persistence in the field of physics, and the motivations of students to pursue physics in Finland. He holds a bachelor's in astrophysics and doctorate in physics education research.
Current Work:
Currently, Dr. Barthelemy is investigating the graduate experiences of women in physics and astronomy. USA based findings have indicated the importance of multi-sourced mentoring from students, post-docs and faculty in their ability to acquire research skills and the experiences necessary to persist in physics and astronomy. However, within these positive experiences the majority of women are experiencing discrimination in the forms of sexism and micro aggression.
In addition to this work, Dr. Barthelemy is also exploring the conditions and experiences of LGBT persons in the field of physics. This work is looking to understand the current climate and educational experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender physicists as they complete their degrees and continue to conduct research and enter the workforce.
