About
Michael Reisch is the distinguished professor of social justice at the University of Maryland Baltimore. He has been a professor and administrator at four other major US universities, and a visiting professor and lecturer at universities on four continents. With an interdisciplinary background in law, history, and political and social theory, Reisch has published over 30 books and monographs and 400 papers and presentations on such topics as poverty, welfare reform, the history and philosophy of social welfare, social justice and social policy, and the impact of economic globalization. He has held leadership positions in national, state, and local advocacy and professional organizations, directed and consulted on political campaigns in four states, and been honored for his work by the Maryland General Assembly, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and nonprofit organizations, professional associations, and universities. In 2013, the Maryland chapter of the National Association of Social Workers named him “Social Work Educator of the Year.” In 2014, he was named “Teacher of the Year” by the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and received the Council on Social Work Education’s “Significant Lifetime Achievement Award.” In 2016, Reisch was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare.
Current Work:
Reisch is currently working on two long-term projects: One is a multicultural history of US social work and social welfare, based on primary and secondary sources; the other is a book on the role of politics in social work and social welfare.
