Faculty Lecturer at Georgia State University
About
Dr. Michael Regan is currently serving as a faculty lecturer in the Department of Sociology at Georgia State University. His research interests include examining issues pertaining to racial and ethnic relations, sociology of sport, the sociology of health and well-being, and other pertinent diversity-related issues at the institutional level. Because of his diverse academic background – kinesiology and sociology – he is able to successfully take an interdisciplinary approach when connecting exercise and sport to the broader society. Beyond research, Dr. Regan enjoys taking this diverse agenda to the classroom setting to positively impact and inspire students.
Current Work:
Dr. Michael Regan's current research agenda primarily tends to the underrepresentation of racial and ethnic minorities in college sport leadership positions post-participation. His dissertation and a few manuscripts have centered on the racial discrimination black Americans face in this area. Dr. Regan is currently in the last stages of building on this endeavor, which will ultimately lead to the co-authoring of his first book on the subject.
An additional trajectory of Dr. Regan's research focuses on the health disparities faced by the black community. While there is extensive documentation on the many access issues facing black Americans, with the obesity epidemic plaguing the US population and black Americans moreso, he is particularly interested in finding ways to impact health through increased levels physical activity and proper nutrition. A first step in this plan has already begun, where Dr. Regan is exploring the relationships among physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being in order to better comprehend what drives (or has the potential to drive) communities to be more active.
